Investing in the
Next Generation of CDL Drivers

Submitted by: Dave Mathison, Recruiter – WA, OR, ID, UT

Last year, Oak Harbor Freight Lines proudly donated $1,000 to the Northwest Regional Education Service District to support students in the Portland area who are pursuing their Class A CDL.

This contribution is helping 17 students from multiple high schools across three counties take the first steps toward a professional driving career. All of the students are based in the greater Portland area and will complete their CDL training during spring break and summer break this year — dedicating their time off to building skills that will serve them well into adulthood.

I had the opportunity to attend the event as a guest speaker representing Oak Harbor Freight Lines. During my time with the students, I shared what we do as a company, the critical role transportation plays in our communities, and what it is truly like to be a Class A driver. The engagement and enthusiasm from the group was impressive, and it is clear they are excited to enter a skilled trade with strong long-term opportunity.

All 17 students are eager to begin training and develop the knowledge and discipline required to succeed in this industry. Programs like this play a vital role in strengthening the transportation workforce and creating clear career pathways for young adults in our communities.

The photo above features the 17 participating students along with the instructors and program leaders who are making this opportunity possible.

Oak Harbor Freight is proud to support workforce development initiatives that invest directly in the future of our industry.
