September 2021 Purposeful Observations

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The Purposeful Safety Focus for September is Pallet Jack Safety. Pallet Jacks transport the same heavy loads that a forklift does, without many of the safety features provided on a forklift. Employees using pallets jacks are most times working alone and in confined areas. Operators must be constantly aware of the conditions and hazards around them.

There are 5 Key to Pallet Jack Safety that will help you operate your pallet jack safely.

5 Keys to Pallet Jack Safety

Use the pallet jack in appropriate areas

Pallet jacks are designed to be used in smooth, debris free areas that are, by and large, level. This would be on metal or paved areas; not dirt, gravel, or other uneven surfaces.

Reduce the weight or get help

There are times when the weight to be moved is too heavy for the particular loading or unloading situation. In these cases, remove some of the freight to lessen the load or get help moving the jack.

Maintain your balance and footing

You provide the “power” to the forklift. Make sure your footing is stable as you move loads that may be many times heavier than yourself.

Clean the path of debris

Pallet jacks have very small and very hard wheels with little ground clearance. Any debris can stop a pallet jack instantly. If unprepared, the sudden stop can cause injury or damage to yourself and others.

Leave yourself an out

It is easy to lose control of a pallet jack, don’t put yourself in a position that may crush or pinch your body, arms, legs, or hands.
