John C. Maxwell is a household name in Leadership Development, and for good reason. His direct, story-based style is extremely accessible. This short and concise book takes a very direct approach to talking about leadership qualities. As you read, you’ll most likely nod along, and say “yes, I already knew that, but I didn’t know how to talk about it.” The excellent thing about this book is that it gives you the right words to name these leadership qualities.
Some of my favorite chapters are:
- “Communication: Without it you travel alone”
- “Generosity: Your candle loses nothing when it lights another”
- “Relationships: If you get along, they’ll go along”
Maxwell writes in the introduction that some people read just one chapter a week as each chapter is only six or seven pages long. They then use the rest of the week to think about how what they learned applies to their lives.
Randy, in Reno, used this strategy to go through the book with his team within weekly 30-minute meetings, and saw excellent results. For time-strapped people, this book is a good investment in yourself and your team.
