January 2021: Purposeful Observation

Print Friendly, PDF & Email
January’s Purposeful Observation Focus is Slips, Trips, & Falls. Rain, ice and snow creates slippery surface hazards that lead to Slips, Trips and Falls. This month we are again focusing on the five Purposeful Keys to preventing slips, trips, and falls at Oak Harbor. Utilize these Keys consistently to reduce the potential of being involved in a slip, trip, or fall.

5 Keys to Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls

Three-Point Contact

Maintain three points of contact with the vehicle or forklift. By maintaining three points of contact with two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand, you minimize the likelihood of falling.

Climb In, Back Out

Always climb in the cab and back out using 3-point contact. Never jump, this increases the likelihood of a slip and fall and increases stress on the hips, knees and back.

Avoid Distractions

Stay focused on the task of entering and exiting the vehicle. Watch and look for steps and handholds. What for ice and uneven surfaces. When on the dock, be aware of the edge.

Footwear

Wear an appropriate shoe with tread in good condition. Wipe soles dry where mats are available.

Housekeeping

Slips, trips and falls are frequently the result of items left or placed where they create trip hazards. Keep your work area neat and orderly.
