October 2021 Purposeful Observations

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

October’s Purposeful Safety Focus is Following “Rules of the Road” while in terminal yards and on docks. Rules of the Road are important to eliminate guess work by people walking or operating vehicles, recognizing “what the other person is doing or going to do”. These rules apply to all of our terminal properties, large or small, affecting safe and orderly conduct for vehicles, including trucks, forklifts, and pedestrian traffic.

This month we are focusing on 5 Purposeful Keys that will reduce the risk of an accident or injury while operating vehicles, equipment or simply being a pedestrian on terminal property.

5 Keys to Following the “Rules of the Road” Inside Terminal Yards

Slow down and look both ways

Slow down in congested or low visibility areas. Be sure to stop and look both ways before entering a lane of traffic. Obey terminal speed limits.

Cross lanes of travel at a 90 degree angle

This will allow you better vision both ways in the travel lane and others can see you better as well.

Always leave “an out”

By having a way out, you will always have options to avoid an accident or collusion.

Do not assume you have the right of way

Yield the right of way to vehicles in the established lanes of travel. Before entering traffic, ensure you have been seen by other vehicles or pedestrians.

Stay to the right

Drive to the right in the lane or travel and keep right of oncoming vehicles.
