February’s Purposeful Observation Focus is Awkward Lifting. Unfortunately, in LTL Freight, the frequent challenge is handling awkward freight like tires, mattresses, pipe and long freight; and equipment such as pallets, converter gear or dollies, and dock plates. Injuries can also occur when lifting freight from uneven heights or over the top of other freight. With awkward freight or uneven surfaces, Safe Lifting is more critical than ever.
Plan to Lift Safely
Size up the load, find good handholds, and plan where you will place the load and the path you will take to get it there.
Keep Your Balance
Long and Awkward Freight may tip or pull you off balance, causing stress and strain to individual muscles and joints.
Avoid Over-Reaching
Maintaining proper leverage requires that you keep you weight under you. Hold the load close and avoid twisting while you turn. When moving objects from uneven surfaces – lift straight up, pivot with your entire body and place the load straight down. Never reach over other freight to lift the item to be moved.
Push, Don’t Pull
Pushing allows you to use your body’s strong leg muscles, rather than stressing the back, arms and hands.
Use the Proper Tool and Ask for Help
Hand trucks, drum trucks, pallet jacks and forklifts are means of reducing lifting. When help is needed to move freight of equipment, ask for it.
