April’s Purposeful Observation Focus is Safe Lifting. Back injuries are one of the leading causes of injury both at home and work.

There are 5 Key to Safe Lifting that when used consistently, reduce the impact of lifting on your back.

5 Keys to Safe Lifting

Size up the load and pull it close

Ask yourself if you need to get help or use material handling equipment. Keep the object close your body when picking it up.

bending tipsBend at the knees, not at the waist

This maintains the natural curve of your spine and puts it in a strong position to lift.

Lift with your legs, not your back

Your leg muscles are stronger than your back muscles. Do not arch or slouch your back as you are lifting.

bending tipsPivot, don’t twist

Twisting puts your back in a weak position. Lead with your hips as you change directions and keep your shoulder straight.

Drop the load the same way you picked it up

Set it down carefully and squat with your knees and hips.
